Taking Your Bike on Vienna Public Transport
Updated
Combining the bike with Vienna's transit network lets you skip hills, dodge rain and reach trailheads fast. Here is how to do it correctly.
When bikes are allowed
Bikes travel on the U-Bahn outside the morning and evening rush, broadly before 6:30, between 9:00 and 15:00, and after 18:30 on weekdays, with no restrictions at weekends or on public holidays.
On trams and city buses, full-size bikes are not permitted. Regional and S-Bahn trains carry bikes in marked carriages, often with wider time windows than the U-Bahn.
Tickets and where to stand
You need a half-fare bike ticket for each bike on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn; children's bikes and folding bikes packed as luggage ride free.
Board the carriage marked with a bicycle pictogram, keep the bike close, and leave the multi-purpose area clear for wheelchairs and prams, which have priority.
Smart combinations
Use the U-Bahn to reach the edge of the city, then ride out to the Danube, the Lobau or the vineyards, saving energy for the scenic part of the day.
If you only need a one-way lift after a long ride home, riding back on transit during off-peak hours is a stress-free way to finish.
